Today's coastal surveillance flight was performed from Raritan Bay to Little Egg Inlet. No debris was observed along the flight path in the water or on the beaches, and the water appeared in good condition. Schools of bunker, dolphins and a whale were observed along the flight path.

06/17/2014

Today's coastal surveillance flight was canceled due to poor visibility along the coast.

06/16/2014

Today's coastal surveillance flight was performed from Raritan Bay to Little Egg Inlet. No debris was observed along the flight path in the water or on the beaches. The aircraft remote sensor detected elevated concentrations of chlorophyll A in Raritan Bay. The Bureau of Marine Water Monitoring will continue to monitor these areas with coastal surveillance flights, and samples will be collected and analyzed if levels remain elevated.

Saturday's coastal surveillance flight was performed from Raritan Bay to Little Egg Inlet and Sunday's coastal surveillance flight was performed from Raritan Bay to Cape May Point and back up Delaware Bay. No debris was observed along the flight path in the water or on the beaches, and water appeared in good condition.

Today's coastal surveillance flight was cancelled due to poor weather conditions.

Saturday's coastal surveillance flight was conducted from Raritan Bay to Barnegat Light. No debris was observed along the flight path in the water or on the beaches, and the water appeared in good condition. Lots of fish and dolphins were observed.

Sunday's coastal surveillance flight was conducted from Raritan Bay down to Cape May Point and up Delaware Bay. No debris was observed along the flight path in the water or on the beaches, and the water appeared in good condition. No evidence of Friday's fish wash-up was observed.

The aircraft remote sensor detected lower concentrations of chlorophyll A in Raritan and Delaware Bay. However, Marine Water Monitoring grabbed two water samples in Delaware Bay today: one was at Cape May Point and the other near the Villas. Both samples contained moderate levels of a normally diverse assemblage of phytoplankton with a significant amount of detritus. No toxic species were detected.

The Bureau of Marine Water Monitoring will continue to monitor through coastal surveillance flights.

Today's coastal surveillance flight was conducted from Raritan Bay down to Cape May Point and up Delaware Bay. No debris was observed along the flight path in the water or on the beaches. A fish wash-up of bunker (menhaden) was observed along Delaware Bay from Cape May Point to Villas, Lower Township. There are no recreational bathing beaches in this area. This type of wash-up is typically seen when a bunker boat has a net failure. Fish & Wildlife are investigating bunker boats in the area.

Unrelated to the wash-up, and further north in Delaware Bay off Pierces Point, the aircraft remote sensor detected elevated concentrations of chlorophyll A. Based on historical data, these levels are not unusual for this area. The coastal surveillance flight for Sunday will be extended to include this area of Delaware Bay, and the Bureau of Marine Water Monitoring will grab samples on Monday if elevated levels persist.

The aircraft remote sensor continues to detect elevated concentrations of chlorophyll A in Raritan Bay. In response on Monday, the Bureau of Marine Water Monitoring collected five samples from the area and the samples showed that there is a bloom of non-toxic phytoplankton dominated by Thalassiosira sp and Heterosigma akashiwo. Cell counts ranged from 2200 to 3300 cells/mL.

No toxic phytoplankton species were detected. Thalassiosira sp will result in a brown water discoloration, but is not associated with the “Brown Tide” organism Aureococcus anophageffrens.

The Bureau of Marine Water Monitoring will continue to monitor these areas with coastal surveillance flights.

06/03/2014

Today's coastal surveillance flight was performed from Raritan Bay south to Little Egg Inlet. Beach and water conditions are good. See the June 2nd flight report for an explanation about the increased chlorophyll levels in Raritan Bay.
